Wheelchairs:

Wheelchairs are available in many styles, from self-propelled that are user-controlled, transit that are attendant or carer controlled to more specialized reclining or heavy-duty wheelchairs. Wheelchairs have many common features, they fold easily, can be lightweight to help with transportation, have suspension to add comfort, or have removable quick-release wheels or maybe flip-up and removable armrests. We offer a large choice of wheelchairs which are split into categories, self-propelled wheelchairs, transit wheelchairs, transport wheelchairs, heavy-duty wheelchairs, children’s wheelchairs, and reclining wheelchairs.

Transit wheelchairs:

There are various types of wheelchairs available to purchase, this category is called Transit wheelchairs. They can only be propelled by an attendant or carer rather than the user. Transit wheelchairs or attendant-propelled wheelchairs as they are sometimes referred to have their own characteristics. They have smaller rear wheels, usually 12.5 inches, instead of larger wheels (usually 24 inches) which are supplied on self-propelled wheelchairs. The smaller rear wheels make Transit wheelchairs more compact and easier to store or transport in car boots and these wheelchairs are usually lighter than other types. Many have the option of half-folding backrests, removable footrests, or quick-release rear wheels so they can be made even more compact and lighter for transportation. Some wheelchairs also have flip-up armrests, a great help if you need to get close to a table or desk or if you need to transfer out of the wheelchair. In some instances, these armrests can also be removed to make the transit wheelchair even lighter and more compact. Like most wheelchairs they are easily foldable, you just lift the seat material front and back and pull upwards, this should concertina the wheelchair in half.  Many Transit wheelchairs also have cable brakes on the handlebars, these provide extra control as you can use the brake either as a parking brake or alternatively as a slowing brake, a great help when you encounter steep inclines. We have many other types of wheelchairs available, from heavy-duty or Bariatric wheelchairs, reclining wheelchairs, and pediatric wheelchairs for children, all of which are available on this website. Self-propelled wheelchairs have large rear wheels which are fitted with hand rims; these give the user the ability to self-propel in all directions without assistance, thereby retaining independence. Self-propelled wheelchairs though, still have ergonomic push handlebars as well so a carer or attendant can push; many also have handlebar brakes to assist in slowing or operating the parking brake. Like other types of wheelchairs, there are many options apart from handlebar brakes, like quick-release rear wheels to allow compact storage and to reduce the carry weight. Some wheelchairs have larger diameter all-terrain treaded tires and/or suspension for rougher terrain, and most have half-folding back mechanisms, removable height adjustable footplates, and lift-up/removable armrests. Electric wheelchairs are controlled by the user, but there are some that have the option for either dual use with an attendant or sole use for the attendant. Powerchairs are controlled by a Joystick which can be mounted either on the right or left side armrest or on the handlebar for an attendant to use. This joystick is used to manoeuvre the electric wheelchair, control its speed, and in many instances has a battery indicator and horn for peace of mind. Electric wheelchairs are available in compact versions which are ideal for use indoors, as they have a narrower wheelbase and are able to pivot on their own axis, which makes them highly manoeuvrable. These models can be an ideal alternative to a standard wheelchair, enabling the user to keep their independence and reduce the effort of using a self-propelled wheelchair or being pushed by an attendant. Other models include ones with larger rear wheels, suspension and or padded captain seats, these electric wheelchairs are usually larger overall with larger battery capacity to extend their range and are able to navigate rougher terrain outdoors. We have powerchairs like the Freedom range, which are lightweight and compact for ease of transportation but are equally adaptable indoors or outdoors. What are mobility aids?

Mobility aids are devices or equipment designed to assist people with mobility impairments to move around and perform daily activities. These aids include items such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, mobility scooters, and stairlifts.

Who uses mobility aids?

People with mobility impairments such as those with disabilities, injuries, or chronic conditions that affect their ability to walk, stand or balance can use mobility aids. Additionally, older adults who experience difficulty moving around due to age-related mobility decline may also benefit from these aids.

How do I choose the right mobility aid for my needs?

Choosing the right mobility aid depends on several factors, including the level of mobility impairment, the environment in which the aid will be used, and personal preferences. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an occupational therapist or physical therapist, to determine which mobility aid is most appropriate for your specific needs.

Are mobility aids covered by insurance?

In some cases, mobility aids may be covered by insurance, such as Medicare or private insurance plans. However, coverage policies vary, so it is best to check with the specific insurance provider to determine what is covered.

How do I maintain my mobility aid?

Regular maintenance is crucial to keep mobility aids functioning properly and ensure their longevity. Cleaning, lubrication, and regular inspections are recommended to prevent wear and tear and identify any necessary repairs. It is also important to follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions and replace any worn or damaged parts promptly.

Can I travel with my mobility aid?

Many mobility aids are designed for portability and can be easily transported. However, it is important to check with transportation providers, such as airlines or buses, to determine any specific guidelines or requirements for travelling with mobility aids.

What are the legal requirements for using mobility aids in public places?

In many countries, including the United Kingdom, there are legal requirements to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities. This includes requirements for public spaces to be designed and equipped to accommodate mobility aids.
